Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder distinguished by repeated interruptions in breathing throughout the sleep. The interruption is called apnea which is caused by the soft tissue collapse in the airway that prevents oxygen from reaching the lungs. As sleep apnea disturbs the entire sleep cycle, it will directly impact on the health, mental performance, energy. Sleep apnea becomes fatal if left untreated.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): It is the most common sleep apnea type. In OSA, air flow is stopped into the lungs due to a blockage in the upper airway i.e. in the throat or nose.
Central apnea: It is a less common type. In this case, though the airway is open, air flow is stopped into the lung because no effort was made to breathe. As the signal between the brain and the body is affected, the breathing stops. People with CSA will not often snore, so the condition is unnoticed.
Mixed apnea: This is a mixture of both obstructive sleep apnea and central apnea conditions.
When the body does not receive adequate oxygen, it leads to serious health complications such as stroke, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, Diabetes & pre-diabetes.
Nocturnal polysomnography: It is a sleep study used to diagnose sleep disorders. Polysomnography records brain waves, oxygen levels in the blood, breathing and heart rate. Even leg and eye movements are watched during the test.
DNA Appliance: It is an alternative to the conventional fixed orthodontic appliance. This removable appliance is worn both by adults and children at the day and night time. The DNA appliance is natural, pain-free, helps in correcting and aligning the teeth. It improves the upper airway with no surgery, drugs.
nCPAP: The collapsed airway is expanded by pumping air into the nose with Nasal continuous positive airway pumps. It is simple and effective in curing sleep disorders.
